A workforce that reflects our region
Diversity program
Commitment to a diverse workforce
Sound Transit's commitment is to build the regional transit system using a workforce that includes the diverse people of our region. It started in 1994, when the board of the Regional Transit Authority (now Sound Transit) adopted a resolution outlining its expectation that project contractors comply with all non-discrimination, equal employment opportunity (EEO) and affirmative action regulations.
Guiding principles
Sound Transit's guiding principles for contracting and employment strive to meet these objectives for contracts awarded for consultant and professional, construction, and goods and services:
• Maximum use of minority, women and disadvantaged businesses (M/W/DBEs)
• Maximum use of local businesses
• The use of trainees, interns and apprentices who reflect the region's diversity
Strategies for success
The Diversity Programs Office develops strategies and policies to provide meaningful contracting opportunities to M/W/DBE and other small businesses. The aim is for these businesses to have equal employment opportunities to compete for contract work and for Sound Transit to achieve workforce diversity reflective of our region.
