Sounder North ridership up 33 percent over October 2011

Sound Transit set all-time ridership records for combined boardings on its commuter trains, buses and light rail in October. Average weekday boardings topped 100,000. The average weekday number tops the old record of 98,086 set in September and is a 14 percent improvement over October 2011.

October marks the third month in a row that Sound Transit set new weekday ridership records.

"The region continues to discover that Sound Transit buses and trains are the convenient, flexible and economical way to get around," said Sound Transit Board Chair and Pierce County Executive Pat McCarthy. "Every month, more and more people figure out they can leave their cars behind without sacrificing their lifestyles."

The weekday ridership surge set records on 14 ST Express bus routes, Sounder north and south lines and Tacoma Link light rail. Ridership on the Sounder north line running from Everett to Seattle with stops in Mukilteo and Edmonds saw 33 percent growth over October 2011 with 1,304 average weekday boardings. Tacoma Link topped 4,000 average weekday boardings for the first time in October.

Link light rail in Seattle continued its stretch of monthly double-digit growth with average weekday boardings of 27,254, a 12 percent jump over October 2011.
