New route makes it easier for Lakewood riders to connect with Sounder commuter rail

Starting Monday, September 28 Sound Transit kicks off new bus service in Pierce County to provide Lakewood riders with better access to all Sounder trains on the South line.

The ST Express Route 580 will run peak-period service between Lakewood Station and Puyallup Station where riders can transfer to and from the Sounder train. Currently not all Sounder trains
serve Lakewood Station.

“Sounder has become a lifeline for Pierce County commuters who don’t want to sit in traffic,” said Sound Transit Board member and Pierce County Executive Pat McCarthy. “This new service will offer commuters in the Lakewood area an easy way to connect with the train.”

The new route also stops at SR 512 Park-and-Ride, South Hill Park-and-Ride and the Puyallup Fairgrounds Red Lot. It replaces former Pierce Transit Route 495.

The new route will offer riders several improved service options, including:

  • Better connections with trains. Route 580 will connect with all scheduled Sounder service, including the reverse-commute trains. This offers anyone living or working in the Lakewood area better access to all Sounder trains on the south line.
  • Service to and from the Lakewood Sounder Station. Route 495 currently runs only within Puyallup.
  • Express Route 580 will take riders between the Puyallup Sounder Station and the Lakewood Sounder Station, with stops at the SR-512 Park & Ride, the South Hill Park & Ride, and the Washington State Fair’s Red Lot.
