Public invited to review, comment on proposed Sounder railroad yard preliminary design plans

Sound Transit will hold an informational open house on preliminary design plans for construction of a new Sounder railroad operations and maintenance facility in Lakewood on Monday, March 28, from 4 - 6 p.m. at Lakewood City Hall, 6000 Main St. SW.

The proposed 40,000 square-foot, single-story storage facility on the existing Sounder Rail Yard site between Steilacoom Boulevard SW and 100th Street SW would contain maintenance bays, material storage areas, offices and facilities for maintenance crews. Supporting facilities such as roadway, site lighting, drainage facilities, and required utility infrastructure are included in the project.

Sound Transit prepared an Environmental Checklist under the State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA),  which is  posted to the agency website at www.soundtransit.org/Projects-and-Plans/Sounder-Yard-and-Shop.

The Sounder Yard and Shop project was approved by voters in the 2008 Sound Transit 2 plan to accommodate existing and future ridership growth on Sounder south line commuter trains. This fall, a mid-day round-trip train will beginning serving all south line stations. Two more roundtrips will be added next year.

In January, average weekday boardings on Sounder system-wide grew 16% compared to 2015 and reached an all-time high of 16,000 boardings per weekday.
