Federal Way native Rhonda Carter, currently deputy chief of staff at USDOT, will support continued success constructing major projects and delivering quality service

Sound Transit CEO Peter Rogoff today announced the hiring of Rhonda Marie Carter as the agency's new chief of staff.

Carter, who is currently deputy chief of staff at the U.S. Department of Transportation, is a Federal Way native who earlier served as White House liaison for the U.S. Department of Energy and special assistant to the White House counsel. She previously worked at the Center for American Progress and the University of Washington.

"Sound Transit will be hugely fortunate to benefit from Rhonda's extensive experience in managing large, complex public organizations as we continue our track record of successfully completing major capital projects. Rhonda's deep roots in the Puget Sound region will serve us all well as we maintain and expand high quality service to the public," Rogoff said.

Carter will join the agency in mid-August.

"I am thrilled to join Sound Transit at this critical juncture. As a native of the South Puget Sound area, I know personally how important access to safe, efficient and reliable transit options is to connecting people from all over the region to educational, employment, and life opportunities. I look forward to helping the agency in its drive to improve that access, and to increase the region's sustainability and economic vitality," Carter said.

As Sound Transit approaches its 20th anniversary the agency is managing a $1.3 billion budget for 2016, achieving record-setting ridership and keeping more than 30 miles of voter-approved light rail extensions on track to open in the next seven years. In November regional voters will consider a Sound Transit 3 ballot measure that proposes an additional 62 miles of light rail as well as investments in bus rapid transit, commuter rail and other services around the region.
