Message from Greg Nickels

Mayor of Seattle

Our region is about to make history in 2009 when, for the first time, passengers will climb aboard Link light rail trains running every few minutes between downtown Seattle and Sea-Tac Airport. The region has waited a long time to experience what will be a world-class transportation system.

This year, Sound Transit will deliver the initial Sound Move light rail segment voters approved in 1996, while also beginning the implementation of the Sound Transit projects that voters passed in November 2008.  Voters gave Sound Transit the great responsibility of continuing to expand our region’s mass transit system.  Voters sent a clear message that Sound Transit is on the right track and is fulfilling its mission to plan, build and operate a transit system that improves mobility for our region.

We have reason to celebrate, but we have much work ahead – this year, and in the future.   Breaking ground north to the University of Washington will provide an economic stimulus that will create thousands of family-wage jobs and benefits to our local economy.

Thank you for your support of Sound Transit.  We will continue earning your confidence by being one of the nation’s finest transit agencies.

On behalf of the Sound Transit Board, you have my commitment that we will act in an environmentally sound, fiscally responsible and publicly accountable manner to serve this region’s transportation needs now and for future generations.
