Eastgate HOV Access - Public Art

Return of the Salmon - Alex Young

Return of the Salmon

Sound Transit partnered with artist Alex Young and the Washington State Department of Transportation to make public art for the Eastgate HOV Access Ramp project possible; it is the first project of its kind in this region. "Return of the Salmon" features 32 cast bronze salmon that "swim" along the length of the pedestrian barrier of the new ramp.  The sculptures are a nod to migrating coho, chinook and sockeye salmon in Sunset Creek near the project.

Alex YoungAlex Young is a registered architect by profession and is a self-styled “art practitioner,” a term he prefers instead of “artist.” He started painting seriously in 1967 and has painted professionally since 1972.  His works are displayed at the University of Washington Medical Center, Seattle Public Library, U.S. Marine Corps Historical Museum, Pemco Financial Center, City of Yashiro in Japan, Washington State Department of Transportation, and many others.  Young’s watercolor paintings have graced the Washington State Ferries annual poster since 1984.  In addition, his paintings also appeared on the posters of the Western Governor Association Annual Meeting, and the National Governor’s Association Annual Meeting (twice).  His work was featured as the Washington State Duck Stamp in 1998 and the Washington State Salmon Stamp in 1994.
