South 25th Station – Public Art

Tacoma Link light rail’s South 25th Street Station sits beneath the Elephant Car Wash and near Pacific Avenue.

The public art at the station is made up of six large colorful fishing lures that move in the wind and are mounted on to the station canopy. The artist, Tacoma native Nate Slater, grew up along the shores of Commencement Bay and has a boat-building background. Therefore, it’s not surprising that he wanted to create artwork for this station that people could relate to as they head toward the waterway. Many fishing-lure manufacturing companies thrived near the Tacoma port since the first half of the last century. These sculptures give an abstract spin on a practical---and locally historic, familiar object.
