South Tacoma Station - Public Art

Inspired by the architecture of Tacoma’s Union Station, two 18-foot tall arches made of steel and stone serve as a gateway and echoes the rhythm and movement of the train as it arrives and departs from the station. A third sculpture pulls out of the earth at the end of a curved granite line that is embedded along the length of the station floor, marking the end of the line.

“Landmark” consists of two Cor-Ten steel and granite sculptures located at the north end of the station site. The inverted arches were inspired by the shape of Tacoma’s Union Station, as well as to suggest the wheels of the steel trains that frequented the historical railroad station. The artwork is aptly titled “Landmark” as it acts as a gateway and distinguishing feature indicating to riders that they have arrived at the station.

The two sculpture sets are connected by an undulating ribbon running the length of the station platform. The ribbon rises out of the pavement to form “End of the Line” a suggestion of a golden railroad spike, signifying that riders have arrived at their destination, the literal ‘end of the line’ of Sounder service to the south.
