Shadow Caster - Ellen Sollod (2001)
“In making art, my desire is to arrest you in the moment,” said Seattle artist Ellen Sollod.
Her work at the Sumner Station is derivative of the hops boom of the late 19th century through a contemporary interpretation of hops kilns within the Sumner Station shelters.
The station artwork includes trellis-like structures located on each side of the platform to greet commuters entering from the north. The roof of each is hydrocut steel in the 
pattern of hops vines, which casts shadows on the sidewalk below in sunny weather. In addition, an artist-designed, cast iron tree grate of stylized hops blossoms is used throughout the station.
Sollod was involved in the Sumner Station project from its inception, including serving as a member of the station design team.
