Quarterly Ridership Report
Fourth Quarter 2011 - October 1 - December 31
All Sound Transit modes except Paratransit showed significant increases in ridership for the Fourth Quarter of 2011. Total Sound Transit passenger boardings were up 12%. Average weekday boardings stood at 86,228, a 14% increase over Fourth Quarter 2010. No major service disruptions occurred during the quarter.
ST Express bus ridership was up 10%, but there was a 13% increase in average weekday boardings, indicating a surge in commuter ridership. Weekend bus boardings declined slightly, in part because of the weekend service reductions implemented in June 2011.
Sounder commuter rail boardings showed an impressive 20% increase for the quarter, continuing the recovery that began during the Third Quarter. Average weekday boardings were up 27%. Both the North and South lines experienced significant growth.
Central Link light rail ridership also increased, but at a rate similar to the last two quarters. Total boardings were up 12%, and average weekday boardings increased by 11%.
Paratransit showed a minor decline of 3%. An average of 220 paratransit boardings occurred each day during the quarter.
Tacoma Link light rail boardings increased by 20%, the fifth consecutive quarter of growth. Average weekday boardings increased by 21%.
Total Sound Transit ridership for the year 2011 was up 10% compared with 2010, increasing from 22.8 million to 25.1 million boardings.
