Safety & Security

Your safety is important. Maybe you ride a Link or Sounder train or ST Express bus. Maybe you walk, shop, live or work near a transit station. Together with Sound Transit Police and uniformed security personnel, it's important that we all work together to stay safe and sound.

ST Express Bus - Security - Safety Education

Link Sounder

Safety around Link light rail and Sounder trains

Look, listen & live

  • Be alert - it's difficult to judge train distance and speed.
  • Look both ways - trains may come from either direction.
  • Listen for train horns and bells.
  • Don't use cell phones. Do remove ear buds.

Tracks are for trains

  • Don't walk, bike, skateboard, jog or play around tracks.
  • Don't take shortcuts across the tracks.
  • Don't lean over railings. Trains can overhang tracks by three feet on each side.
  • Don't cross between, under or walk around a parked train. It may move without warning.

Always use crosswalks and obey all traffic signs, signals and crossing gates

  • Trains always have the right of way.
  • Never walk around or under rail crossing gates.

On the platform

  • Hold small children by the hand while on the platform.
  • Warning strips are located at the edge of station platforms. Stay behind them at all times.

  • Allow passengers to exit the bus before you board.
  • Keep the aisles clear of packages and personal items.
  • As you leave the bus, watch for other motor vehicles.
  • Wait for the bus to pull away before crossing street.
  • Wait only at designated bus stops.
  • Do not attempt to hail a bus from an area not designated as a stop.
  • Do not run after a moving bus.

Security on buses and trains

See something, say something

  • On a train or platform, press emergency intercom button for help at any time.
  • Uniformed security officers, along with police, patrol the system.
  • The public plays an important part in ensuring safety.
  • Dial 911 if you are a witness or a victim of crime.
  • Observe your location so you can give a full description of people and vehicles.
  • Alert security personnel about unattended packages.
  • Please report suspicious behavior, such as persons taking photos of transit operations and equipment or behaving nervously.
