Application Process

Applications will be evaluated and only those candidates whose application materials reflect the strongest combination of qualifications may be contacted for interviews.

Tips for Applying With Sound Transit

  • It is important that your application or resume show all your relevant education and experience, including month and year start and end dates (example: May 1999 - June 2008).
  • If you held several positions while employed with one organization, please add a new work experience for each position.
  • All submitted information and as well as your online application are stored on a secure site.

Please note:

  • Salaries for all positions will be determined based on overall experience, skills and job market. Sound Transit offers a competitive compensation and benefits program.
  • Hiring is contingent upon authorization to work in the United States.
  • Related experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Resumes received from this process may be reviewed for similar open positions without additional advertising.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q. How do I apply for a position at Sound Transit?

On the main Jobs page, click on the position that you are interested in to review the job posting. At the bottom of the job posting, choose "Apply Online" for an online application form. Once applications are received, they are reviewed by a member of the recruiting team. Applications that meet minimum qualifications are forwarded to the hiring supervisor for further review.

Q. How do I know that my application was received by Sound Transit?

A message is displayed in the browser after you submit the online application form. You may print the confirmation page or write down the confirmation number for future reference.

Q. Can I save the online application form and complete it over several sittings? How long can I leave the form open on my computer?

The system does not allow you to save your data and return later to finalize it. If you exit the form before you complete it, you will need to re-enter all your information. We suggest you first gather any information you might need to complete the form. Be aware that you will have 45 minutes to complete the application form; after that it will 'time out'.

Q. If I exit out of the online application without submitting it at the end, do I have to start over from the beginning?

Yes. If you exit out you will have to start from the beginning and re-enter all the information required.

Q. How do I know if the position has been filled if it is listed as “open until filled”?

If the position is no longer listed on the website, it is safe to assume a selection has been made.

Q. Can I have the name of the hiring manager so I know how to address my cover letter?

It is not a practice of Sound Transit to provide the names of hiring managers. Feel free to address your cover letter to Sound Transit’s HR Recruitment Office.

Q. If I apply for more than one position at Sound Transit, do I have to fill out another online application form?

Yes, you need to complete a separate application for each position for which you apply.

Q. Can I apply online for positions that are not posted? Do you accept applications/resumes for future consideration?

We accept applications and resumes only for current open positions. You can subscribe to an E-mail alert to receive up-to-date notifications when positions become open.

Q. I would like to apply for a bus driver, Link light rail operator, Sounder train operator or mechanic position and I have not seen those jobs posted – do you ever post these positions?

No, the recruiting and hiring process for Sound Transit Express bus drivers, Central Link light rail operators, Link Connector shuttle bus, and Sounder commuter rail positions are handled by our transit partners King County Metro, Pierce Transit, Community Transit, and BNSF. Please visit their Web sites for employment information. The only exception is for Tacoma Link light rail positions.

Q. I am an internal candidate – how do I apply for a position?

If an opening is posted on the external Sound Transit Jobs page, follow the same procedures above to fill out an online application form. If you are applying for an internal-only posting, you need to fill out a pdf or Word version of the application form and submit to Human Resources by the closing date. Contact HR if you have further questions.

Q. The online application form is quite detailed. Do I have to answer all the questions?

Please complete all sections of the form carefully, making sure that, at a minimum, you provide information in all the fields marked with an asterisk (*). It is preferable to complete the entire form.

Q. What is meant by "References"?

A reference is someone who can give us information about you as an employee or student -- for example, a former supervisor, co-worker, peer or college professor.

Q. What time is the online application due on the closing date?

Close of business, normally at 5 p.m.

Q. Do you accept phone calls or e-mails to inquire about the status of my application?

Due to the number of applications that we receive, we cannot respond to individual e-mails and phone calls regarding your application status. If you are selected for an interview, it may take two to three weeks before you are contacted.

Q. If I have questions about the online application, EEO form, job responsibilities, certificates, licenses, etc. who should I contact?

Contact Human Resources as indicated below.
