Sound Transit Calls for Artist Applications for Link Light Rail Projects

Body

Sound Transit is soliciting applications from artists interested in creating artwork for the initial segment of its Link Light Rail system. Applicants will compete for several projects, including creating outdoor art for the future Beacon Hill Station entrance plaza and for plazas along Martin Luther King, Jr. Way South.

The Beacon Hill station plaza may include plantings, paving, seating and sculpture. The art must, in some way, relate and respond to the Beacon Hill community. Along MLK Way, a number of artworks will be commissioned over time to focus on the importance and relationship of the various cultures, past and present, in the Rainier Valley. The artworks must be visible from at last one block away. They will be sited in plazas and landscaped areas along the Link light rail line, enhancing MLK Way as a cultural corridor. The selected artists will work with landscape architects to assist in the integration of the artwork and plaza designs.

Interested artists should submit the following to the Sound Transit Art Program, 401 S. Jackson Street, Seattle, WA 98104-2826:

  • A current resume.
  • A letter of interest indicating special interests or directions you desire to pursue or ways in which your art may be utilized within the plazas.
  • No more than 20 slides of your artwork in a clear plastic sheet.
  • A numbered slide sheet with your name, telephone number and a brief description of what is being shown on each slide.

Deadline for artist applications is Monday February 25, 2002. Artists will be selected based on quality of previous work as exhibited in slides, ability to create large-scale artwork out of materials appropriate for an outdoor environment, ability to collaborate with design professionals, letter of interest addressing the specific opportunities. Applicants will be notified of the selections by April 1.

On November 29, 2001, the Sound Transit Board of Directors authorized construction of the 14-mile initial segment of Link light rail. The initial segment will provide service from just north of Sea-Tac Airport, through urban-residential areas of south Seattle and into downtown Seattle. Construction is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2002. The Beacon Hill Station is one of 11 stations in the initial segment.

Sound Transit was created by voters in 1996 to provide a regional system of transit improvements, including Sounder commuter rail, ST Express regional bus service, numerous capital improvements (including park and rides, transit centers and direct access ramps) and Link light rail.
