A new Totem Lake transit stop in the center of I-405 with a new freeway overpass, new transit centers for downtown Kirkland and Totem Lake plus other transit improvements are being planned right now, and people are welcome and encouraged to learn about and comment on the projects at an open house on Thursday, Nov. 9, 5:30 - 8 p.m. at the Kirkland Senior Center, 352 Kirkland Ave. in Kirkland.

The innovative Totem Lake transit stop will be combined with a new freeway overpass at NE 128th St. over I-405 that features direct on and off ramps to the center HOV lanes, creating swift express bus service and convenient bus connections for riders in the Totem Lake area. The Totem Lake transit stop design includes passenger shelters, landscaping and a covered walkway to the nearby Kingsgate Park-and-Ride lot.

The open house will feature designs for the Totem Lake transit stop, HOV direct access ramps, the Totem Lake Transit Center and the freeway overpass.

People are encouraged to comment on the locations being looked at for the two new transit centers. The preferred site for the Totem Lake Transit Center is near the Totem Lake Mall and the Evergreen Healthcare Campus, while different locations for the downtown Kirkland Transit Center are still being studied.

At the open house, people will be able to talk directly with staff from Sound Transit the city of Kirkland, King County Metro and the Washington state Department of Transportation. The projects are scheduled for completion by 2004 and 2005, with construction planned from 2002 to 2003.
