Granite NW has completed the combined utility ductbank on the southwest side of the stadium and will continue the installation at the western entrance. Temporary electrical conduits are being installed to provide power to the west gatehouse of the parking lot. Once the temporary electrical service is active, Granite Inc. will begin demolition of the two buildings on the West side of the stadium (the concessions stand and guest services building). Demolition is expected to start around April 22nd. Construction is underway on the new kitchen building on the north side of the stadium. Crews are excavating for the foundation and utilities. Starting around April 27th, crews will begin installing soldier piles (vertical columns) that form the retaining wall behind the kitchen. |
UW Station construction
Sound Transit is now finishing work on the new 16-mile Link light rail line, a critical piece of this region's transportation future. Beginning in Summer 2009, trains will carry riders quickly and reliably from downtown Seattle to Tukwila, stopping at 13 stations along the way. Service to SeaTac airport will begin in December, 2009.
University Link is a 3.15 mile tunnel extension of this light rail line, which will carry an additional 70,000 daily riders, bringing the total daily ridership of the system to 114,000 in 2030. University Link will be operational in 2016, connecting Capitol Hill and the University of Washington to downtown Seattle and the rest of the Link light rail line.
Final design of the University of Washington light rail station is nearly complete and early utility and site preparation work is beginning at the future station site.
Utility Relocation: the first step
Early U-Link construction activities begin in February 2009 with the relocation of utilities and concession stands near Husky Stadium. This phase of the project is expected to take seven months and include new storm drains under the parking lot south of the stadium, new water, power and communications lines in the landscaped area southwest of the stadium and demolition of two small ticket office, concession and restroom buildings.

What to expect
While the work is underway, you can expect:
-
The northern driveway to Husky Stadium will be temporarily reduced to one lane in either direction. This work will only impact drive lanes for a short time.
-
Chain link fences will be installed around a portion of the parking lot and landscaped areas adjacent to the stadium. This fencing will remain in place for the entire seven-month phase.
-
Temporary chain link fencing will be installed around the immediate work area when crews are working in the southern parking lot. These fences will be in place only a short time.
-
A new gravel walkway will connect the parking areas with the pedestrian trail along the Montlake Cut.
-
A small number of parking stalls will be unavailable during the construction work (UW parking services will contact permit holders to make alternative arrangements).
Please be cautious around construction sites. When walking, biking or driving around a construction site always remember to be aware of your surroundings. Stay on the sidewalks or designated paths. Slow down when driving near construction activities and watch for flaggers or detours. Be alert, and be safe.
Next Steps
Utility relocation is only the first step in building the light rail station at the University of Washington. Construction at the UW will be accomplished with multiple contracts and is expected to last approximately six years, wrapping up in 2015. Download the project schedule in .pdf format >>>
