Public Art Projects

The Sound Transit art program, STart, brings an artist's perspective to what is mainly an engineering and architectural project. Besides improving the appearance and safety of transit facilities, art helps patrons feel welcome. Art reflects the community, involves the community and opens up opportunities for small businesses and minorities.

Sounder Commuter Rail Station Art

Artwork at each Sounder rail station reflects a unique combination of community personality, design team aesthetics, individual artist's imagination, creativity, diligence and tenacity.  The goal is that each artwork be strong unto itself, reveal in a poetic way something about the station's community, and subtly make the commuter's daily activity of moving about the station more memorable.

ST Express Public Art

Artwork is integrated throughout the ST Express bus system - in transit centers, park-and-ride lots, HOV access ramps, overpasses and walkways.  The artwork contributes to how the transit system functions; paving can warn vehicles and pedestrians to be attentive to shared space or a marker can help transit riders navigate complicated facilities.  In these and other ways, artists make contributions to the ST Express bus system and the communities it serves.

Light Rail Public Art

Artwork for the light rail system enhance the visual character of the system line and reinforces the unique identity of each of the stations.  Artwork is integrated both at stations and along the line, with each individual artwork reflecting its surroundings, yet functioning as a recognizable part of a family of works.

Tacoma Link

Artwork created for Tacoma, in many cases by Tacoma artists, enhances the character and unique identity of the five Tacoma Link stations, while consistent forms and materials shape the stations.  The Tacoma Link public art collection has received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Tacoma Arts Commission, and was named the American Institute of Architects Project of the Month for April 2006.
