Tacoma-to-Lakewood Track & FacilitiesDescription
Sound Transit is expanding Sounder commuter rail service to Lakewood with new stations in South Tacoma and Lakewood. Expanded Sounder service will operate along a new 1.2-mile track extension in Tacoma, from the Tacoma Dome Station to the M Street overpass at South Tacoma Way, where it will connect to the existing Lakeview Subdivision rail line and continue south seven miles to Lakewood.
On Dec. 13, 2007, the Sound Transit Board identified the track configuration for the rail connection from D Street to M Street in downtown Tacoma, a key component to the southern extension of Sounder commuter rail. The Board motion and route map are available for more information.
Lakeview Subdivision track improvements will include all new track and signal systems; grade crossings from M Street in Tacoma to Bridgeport Way in Lakewood will be brought up to current safety standards and new commuter rail train layover tracks in Lakewood will be constructed. These improvements will be completed before the new 1.2-mile section of track from Tacoma Dome Station to M Street is finished in late 2011 or early 2012, allowing the start of Sounder service to South Tacoma and Lakewood.
