Speed the Plow - Gloria Bornstein (2001)
Seattle artist Gloria Bornstein designed the art at the Puyallup Station. She says of her art, “My artworks explore the archaeology of place. I make art from the unique elements that give a place its multi-faceted identity, considering the hidden voices of a place, its natural phenomena, and its program in the built environment.”
Regarding the art at the Puyallup Station, she describes it as “seven archways, based in the theme of cycles. These archways welcome pedestrians onto the platforms, flank the depot, and mark the entrance. The artwork responds to the community’s wish to honor the rich history of farming in the region. The artist collaborated in the design of the station, including transitional spaces, such as entrances and exits, the depot, and shelters.
Text on the columns is an interpretation of the different geological layers of soil composition of the region.
An archway welcomes travelers at the entrance along a Japanese rock garden. The garden pays tribute to the farming contributions of Japanese Americans from the region.”
