Mapping the Future -- Sound Transit Plan

The region is growing. In fact, by 2040, our region will grow by another 40 percent.  Getting around is difficult today and will prove tougher than ever unless we invest in the future of our region’s transportation system.

The region’s transportation challenges require both additional investments in transit as well as companion improvements to the regional road network.  That’s why Sound Transit is part of the Roads & Transit partnership. It is Sound Transit’s job to tackle the transit challenges—known as Sound Transit 2.

The Sound Transit 2 Plan is the result of nearly two years of work with the region’s cities and counties, transportation experts, leaders and citizens to shape a plan for the future.  It builds on the current light rail, commuter rail and regional bus system approved by voters in 1996 and in place and under construction today.

On May 24th, 2007, the Sound Transit Board adopted the Sound Transit 2 plan -- a broad range of investments in the regional transit system, including 50 miles of light rail extensions. These investments will expand daily regional transit ridership on the sound transit system to nearly 360,000 by 2030.  Read the news release>>>
