Cash only for now on Sounder's ticket vending machines - temporary satellite glitch won't allow credit card use

Due to a temporary glitch in the satellite that communicates with the credit and debit card processing network, Sound Transit's Sounder ticket vending machines will only accept cash until the connection can be corrected.

The machines will still be available this weekend for cash purchases with three located at the King Street Station platform in Seattle, three at the Auburn Station, five at the Tacoma Dome parking garage and one at Sound Transit's Union Station headquarters. The satellite link is expected to be on-line soon, and Sound Transit apologizes for any customer inconvenience.

On Monday, Sept. 18, regular rush hour rail transit returns to Puget Sound with the inaugural run of Sounder service to Tacoma, Sumner, Auburn and Seattle. The 55-minute trips leave Tacoma at 6:20 and 6:50 in the morning, and leave Seattle in the afternoon at 5:25 and 5:45. Service will begin in Kent in November, Puyallup in February and Tukwila by next September.

The two-level Sounder passenger cars feature comfortable seats, restrooms, cupholders, water fountains, work tables, protected outlets for laptop computers and storage areas for bicycles, wheelchairs and strollers. Along with the recently completed King Street Station, construction has begun at other commuter rail stations that will be located in Puyallup, Sumner, Auburn, Kent, and Tukwila. The service is planned to expand in 2001/2002 south to Lakewood and north to Everett.

Sounder commuter rail is one part of Sound Move, the voter-approved plan to bring Link light rail and ST Express bus service to King, Pierce and Snohomish counties. Sounder's customer information line is 1-888-889-6368; for TTY hearing impaired users please call 1-888-713-6030; and the Sounder Web site is www.sounder.org.
