FTA says light rail pre-construction activities will be eligible for federal funds

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) today approved Sound Transit's request for a Letter of No Prejudice (LONP) for $6.5 million worth of pre-construction activity related to Central Link light rail.

"This action allows Sound Transit to use local funds for these "critical path" activities to keep Link preparation activities on schedule," said Board Chair/King County Executive Ron Sims. "Then, when we receive our Full Funding Grant Agreement (FFGA) from FTA, we will be able to apply those federal funds to these projects."

"I can just feel the momentum building," added Sims. "First came federal final design authority and the release of the previously withheld $50 million. The pieces are falling into place so that when we do receive the FFGA - and we will - we'll be ready to begin construction of this vital piece of the region's transportation system."

The projects covered in the LONP include widening of the E-3 Busway, utility relocations, procurement of tactile warning pavers, pre-construction services for work in the Rainier Valley and construction management services. The LONP is not a guarantee that future federal money will be approved for this project.
