Groundbreaking for Bellevue Transit Center

Federal, state and local officials will join Sound Transit and its partners King County Metro, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and the City of Bellevue to break ground for the new Bellevue Transit Center at 4 p.m. on Friday October 26, 2001.

The $21.7 million (in Year of Expenditure dollars) project will bring major improvements to the transit center, including:

• New large weather-protecting canopies over an extended transit passenger island;
• Increased space for more buses (10 bays will serve up to 100 buses per hour during peak hours);
• Increased seating;
• Improved signage;
• New customer service area;
• Added bus stops and shelters along adjacent streets;
• Dramatic public art.

This project is the single largest transit improvement on the Eastside to date. Along with the upcoming Access Downtown (Bellevue) project and planned improvements to Interstates 405 and 90, Sound Transit is meeting its commitment to build an integrated regional transit system.

Sound Transit was created by voters in 1996 to provide Sounder commuter rail, ST Express regional bus, and Link light rail services in the central Puget Sound area.
