Sporting spiffy custom-designed "Puget Sound" upholstery and customer-requested features such as reclining seats, extra large overhead luggage racks and reading lamps, the first eight of 12 new articulated low-floor ST Express buses have arrived. The media is invited to view the new buses from 1- 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 8, at the King County Metro South Base, 12100 East Marginal Way S., Tukwila.

One bus is already in service and seven more of the 58-seat buses will soon to be running on ST Express routes 540, 545, and 546 serving Redmond, Bellevue, Kirkland, the University District and downtown Seattle. Four more buses will arrive in the next few days, and Sound Transit has a remaining option to purchase 13 more of the $440,000 buses from New Flyer of America.

ST Express is part of the Regional Express division of Sound Transit, which includes 18 new limited-stop regional ST Express bus routes and 49 capital projects including improvements to transit centers, park-and-ride lots and HOV lanes.

Voter-approved in 1996, Sound Transit is on track to implement a three-county regional transit system plan known as Sound Move. Along with ST Express, Sound Move includes Sounder commuter rail, an 82-mile system using existing rail lines serving Everett, Edmonds, Mukilteo, Seattle, Tukwila, Kent, Auburn, Sumner, Puyallup, Tacoma and Lakewood; and Link light rail, a 21-mile system connecting the cities of Seattle, Tukwila and SeaTac and a 1.6-mile system in Tacoma.
