The Sound Transit Board has scheduled a forum to hear a final round of public comments before it chooses a final route and station locations for the Central Link light rail segment between the University District and the Northgate Transit Center.

The board is scheduled to choose on July 27 between five different route alternatives for the portion of the Link light rail system that will connect the University District with the Roosevelt and Northgate communities. A station near the existing Northgate Transit Center would provide a connection point to light rail for commuters and travelers from North King and Snohomish counties.

Although funding for this segment of the light rail line hasn't been identified, the extension to Northgate was identified as the top priority should additional funds become available in the regional transit plan approved by voters in 1996. The selection of a route and station locations and completion of preliminary engineering will enhance the opportunities to obtain funding for this portion of the project.

The 24-mile Central Link light rail system is a part of the regional transit plan approved by the region's voters in 1996. The plan also includes Sounder commuter rail service on existing tracks which will begin limited service between Tacoma and Seattle in September, and 18 new limited-stop regional ST Express bus routes, ten of which are already in service.
