Public hearings provide another opportunity for public comment to help narrow options for light rail transit routes

Before deciding which Link light rail route options should be analyzed as part of its Environmental Impact Statement, the board of Sound Transit - the Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority - will hold two public hearings to provide an additional opportunity for public comment. The hearings will be held:

A number of potential alternative routes for segments of the central Link light rail system serving SeaTac, Tukwila and Seattle were identified through public comments and a series of public meetings held late last year and early this year. Citizens in the affected communities recently have been participating in a round of public workshops to help identify which alternatives are the most promising and should be advanced for more detailed analysis as part of a draft environmental impact statement. The public hearings have been scheduled to allow another opportunity for members of the Sound Transit Board to hear from the public before deciding which alternatives should advance into the enviromental review at its regular meeting on May 14. A separate process is underway in Pierce County for Tacoma's 1.6-mile Link light rail line.

Approved by voters in 1996, Sound Transit is on track to implement a three-county regional transit system plan known as Sound Move. Sound Move will be a seamless blend of three transportation systems: Sounder commuter rail, running 81 miles from Everett to Tacoma/Lakewood; Link light rail, a 24-mile system connecting the cities of Seattle, Tukwila and SeaTac and a 1.6 mile system connecting downtown Tacoma with the Tacoma Dome commuter station; and Regional Express, a bus transit system that will connect the major urban areas of Bellevue, Everett, Tacoma and Seattle with other cities and numerous communities with 20 new, fast, limited-stop bus routes.
