Sound Transit Board to elect new chair Thursday, August 27, 1998

Sound Transit - The Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority - will elect a new chair at the Sound Transit Board meeting, Thursday, August 27th, 2-5 p.m. at the Puget Sound Regional Council's 6th floor board room, 1011 Western Avenue, Seattle, WA. 

Snohomish County Executive Bob Drewel announced his desire to step down as Chair of Sound Transit Board at the July 23rd Board meeting. Drewel, 52, joined the Sound Transit Board June 1994 and became Chair on January 26, 1996. Drewel's consensus-building leadership style is widely credited for the successful three-county voter approval for the Regional Transit Authority ballot measure in November 1996. Drewel plans to continue as an active member of the Sound Transit Board. 

"Any success that I have had as your chair is simply a reflection of the strength, commitment and hard work that all of you have brought to your responsibilities as board members," Drewel said in a letter to his fellow board members. 

Approved by voters in 1996, Sound Transit is on track to implement a three-county regional transit system plan known as Sound Move. Sound Move will be a seamless blend of three transportation systems: Sounder commuter rail, running 81 miles from Everett to Tacoma/Lakewood; Link light rail, a 24-mile system connecting the cities of Seattle, Tukwila and SeaTac and a 1.6 mile system connecting downtown Tacoma with the Tacoma Dome commuter station; and Regional Express, a bus transit system that will connect the major metropolitan areas of Bellevue, Everett, Tacoma and Seattle with other cities and numerous communities with 20 new, fast, limited-stop bus routes and numerous improvements to transit centers, park-and-ride lots and HOV lanes throughout the region.
