Sound Transit's ST Express is thanking its customers and drivers this week in celebration of a major milestone for the regional bus service: carrying 20 million riders in just three years of operation.

"Somewhere, on April 30, the 20-millionth rider boarded an ST Express bus on one of our 19 routes," said Sound Transit Board Chair/King County Executive Ron Sims. "Our Regional Express Department and its ST Express service have become one of Sound Transit's biggest success stories."

"April was a banner month for ST Express," said Sims. "Not only did we carry our 20-millionth rider; our average weekday ridership hit a record 28,400. Our overall weekday ridership was up 29 percent! This shows people are willing to take a viable alternative to sitting in traffic."

In addition to the popular ST Express service, the Regional Express Department is building more than $800-million in capital construction projects - such as transit centers, Park-and-Ride lots and direct access ramps -- to improve the speed and reliability of transit throughout the region.

Last September the ST Express system was completed when the final routes were put into service covering some of the most densely populated areas in King, Pierce and Snohomish Counties. Since September, ridership has continued to climb -- growing by more than 16 percent in the first quarter of this year.
