The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has awarded major construction contracts totaling $20.7 million for two Sound Transit Regional Express projects in Snohomish County.

"Both projects will vastly improve the speed and reliability of buses serving the congested I-5 corridor," said Sound Transit Executive Director Joni Earl.

Mowat Construction Company of Woodinville, WA has been awarded a $13.1 million contract for the HOV direct access ramps to the new Lynnwood Transit Center. Tri-State Construction Company of Bellevue, WA has been awarded a $7.6 million contract for the transit-only direct access ramp at the Ash Way Park-and-Ride Lot.

"By providing direct access from the freeway's HOV lanes to both the Lynnwood Transit Center and the Ash Way Park-and-Ride we are putting in place the beginnings of a Bus Rapid Transit System in South Snohomish County," added Agnes Govern, Director of Sound Transit's Regional Express Department.

The Washington State Department of Transportation will oversee construction on both projects. The Federal Transit Administration is a funding partner in both projects.

"These projects provide transportation solutions and help boost the local economy at a time when it's important to create more jobs," said Dave Dye, WSDOT's Urban Corridors Administrator.

The new Lynnwood Transit Center will be in operation in the fall of 2003 with construction of the Park-and Ride completed in spring, 2004. The transit center will feature 20 bus bays for Community Transit, King County Metro Transit and Sound Transit's ST Express regional bus service. The Ash Way direct access ramp will be completed at the end of 2004. The Lynnwood direct access ramp is scheduled for completion in spring 2005. They will be the first completed direct access ramps in the ST Express system.
