Sound Transit board selects graphic designs for trains and buses

Bold, flowing lines in rich northwest colors of deep blue, teal and green will represent "the new wave of transportation" on Sound Transit's Sounder commuter passenger cars and locomotives, Link light rail trains and Regional Express buses. The sweeping graphic design was selected today by the board of Sound Transit - the Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority - as best representing a feeling of motion, energy and capturing an overall image of the Pacific northwest. Beginning with more than 50 initial concepts and ideas, created by the design and marketing firm Ilium, three designs were selected to be considered by the Sound Transit board and Sound Transit staff actively sought public review and comments. 

Over the past month, more than 350 individuals, including a fifth-grade class from Boston, Massachusetts called, wrote and e-mailed their comments on the three proposed designs. The final design was the overwhelming favorite of the public by more than two-to-one.

Sound Transit is on track to implement a three-county region-wide transit system plan known as Sound Move. Approved by voters in 1996, Sound Move will be a seamless blend of three transportation systems: Sounder commuter rail, running 81 miles from Everett to Tacoma/Lakewood; Link light rail, a 24-mile all-electric system connecting the cities of Seattle, Tukwila and SeaTac and a 1.6 mile system connecting downtown Tacoma with the Tacoma Dome commuter station; and Regional Express, a bus transit system that will connect the major metropolitan areas of Bellevue, Everett, Tacoma and Seattle with numerous cities and communities with 20 new, fast, limited-stop bus routes.
