The finishing touches are just being added to the Sumner Sounder Station and on Saturday March 10, a special community event celebrating the official opening of the Sumner Station begins at 10:30 a.m. featuring Sound Transit and local elected officials. A "sold out" special Sounder train will depart at 11:50 a.m. for an open house at Sound Transit's Union Station headquarters greeted by Sound Transit mascot Zap Gridlock. Sounder will leave King Street Station at 1:50 p.m. and arrive at Sumner Station at 2:25 p.m.

When word got out about the celebration's special Sounder ride to Seattle, on the morning of Feb.9 hundreds of people lined up outside of Sumner City Hall and the public library before they opened to get their free tickets. It took less than an hour for all available seats to be snapped up by Sumner residents.
Sounder ridership per train already ranks as the second highest non-New York commuter rail line in the entire nation. With service starting last month to Kent and Puyallup, Sounder is surpassing opening day ridership projections, averaging about 1,800 daily riders on just two round trips, far exceeding the original projection of 1,500 riders per day on three round trips. Ridership numbers are for regular weekday service only and do not include the Mariners trains or other special service. By 2003, Sounder service is planned to extend north to Everett, Edmonds and Mukliteo and south of Tacoma to Lakewood.
