Tacoma City Councilmember Paul Miller elected as new Sound Transit Board chair, Edmonds City Councilmember Dave Earling tapped as vice-chair

Sound Transit - The Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority - today unanimously elected Tacoma City Councilmember Paul Miller as the new chair of the Sound Transit Board and Edmonds City Councilmember Dave Earling as vice-chair. 

A long-time advocate for rapid transit, Miller, 42, has served on the Sound Transit Board since its inception in September 1993 as the Regional Transit Authority and has served as the board's vice-chair since June 1994. Miller replaces Snohomish County Executive Bob Drewel who announced his desire to step down as chair of Sound Transit Board at the July 23rd board meeting. 

Filling Miller's vice-chair seat is Edmonds City Councilmember Dave Earling, 55, an active regional leader on transportation issues. Along with Miller, Earling is also a charter member of the original Regional Transit Authority Board and he has served as chair of several Sound Transit/Regional Transit Authority committees including public and government affairs, public involvement and rules.

Approved by voters in 1996, Sound Transit is on track to implement a three-county regional transit system plan known as Sound Move. Sound Move will be a seamless blend of three transportation systems: Sounder commuter rail, running 81 miles from Everett to Tacoma/Lakewood; Link light rail, a 24-mile system connecting the cities of Seattle, Tukwila and SeaTac and a 1.6 mile system connecting downtown Tacoma with the Tacoma Dome commuter station; and Regional Express, a bus transit system that will connect the major metropolitan areas of Bellevue, Everett, Tacoma and Seattle with other cities and numerous communities with 20 new, fast, limited-stop bus routes and numerous improvements to transit centers, park-and-ride lots and HOV lanes throughout the region.
