The first-ever stretch articulated bus in Pierce County begins Sound Transit service on Tuesday, June 8

Riders on Pierce Transit's popular Seattle Express bus route will have more seats available between Tacoma and Seattle, thanks to new 60-foot articulated buses from Sound Transit. The very first riders will be greeted with special mementos to celebrate the inaugural 60-passenger bus leaving at 7:21 a.m. on Tuesday, June 8 from the Tacoma Dome commuter park-and-ride lot. The air-conditioned articulated buses have 17 more seats than the current Seattle Express buses and nine more articulated Sound Transit buses should be in service by this September. 

The Seattle Express route will become one of nine limited-stop ST Express bus routes that Sound Transit will introduce this September, with at least nine more ST Express bus routes phased in throughout the region over the next three years. ST Express is part of Regional Express, Sound Transit's most expansive system that will also provide new or improved transit centers, park-and-ride lots and high-occupancy vehicle ramps throughout the region.

Along with Regional Express, Sound Transit is hard at work implementing Sound Move, the regional transit plan approved by voters in 1996 which includes Sounder trains that will introduce rush hour service between Tacoma and Seattle by early 2000 and service north to Everett and south to Lakewood by early 2001; construction of 1.6 mile downtown Tacoma Link light rail and 21 miles of Link light rail connecting SeaTac, Tukwila and Seattle.
