Sound Transit broke ground today on a new transit access project at the University of Washington Bothell and Cascadia Community College in Bothell. The project – called the Bothell Branch Campus Access Project – will make it easier and faster for the more than 400 buses a day that serve the area to get into and out of the campus. The $775,000 construction project upgrades traffic signals into and out of the campus at 195th Street in Bothell, builds a new bus bay and improves transit access on the campus.

“We are delighted to work with Sound Transit on this project to improve access to our facilities” said UW Bothell Chancellor Kenyon S. Chan. “With a strong campus campaign in place to reduce single occupancy vehicle (SOV) trips, these upgrades will make using public transit even easier for our students and visitors.”

Sound Transit, King County Metro Transit and Community Transit from Snohomish County currently serve the campus with 11 routes that move more than 400 buses a day through the campus. The new signal system combined with the new bus bay and improved access point on campus will make transit trips into and out of the campus faster. Today, both transit and other traffic can back up while waiting for signals to change. The new system will detect when buses are approaching or waiting and change the signals accordingly.

“This project is very important to Cascadia Community College, not just now, but as we plan our expansion and new Center for Global Learning and the Arts,” said Cascadia Community College President William Christopher. “We appreciate the transit agencies’ commitment to ensuring our students’ safety during the construction and to enhancing the alternative transportation choices available on the campus.”

The Bothell Branch Campus Access Project is one of 26 different Sound Transit projects in East King County working together to improve transit and HOV options from Snohomish County to Renton.
