Workshops to kick off public participation in designing Sounder commuter rail stations

Publish Date
Body

Public involvement will be a key to the effective design of commuter rail stations in communities between Tacoma and Seattle as Sound Transit's Sounder commuter rail service moves toward inaugurating service between Tacoma and Seattle by the end of 1999. The process gets underway with public open houses and design workshops in Puyallup and Sumner for the stations planned in those communities. Both events will feature an informal open house from 4 - 7 p.m during which people can drop by to pick up information and ask questions, and a public workshop from 7 - 9 p.m during which participants will be asked to share their thoughts and ideas on incorporating station facilities into the community.

The open houses and workshops are the first of numerous opportunities for the public to participate in making these new assets an integral part of the community. They are sponsored jointly by the cities of Puyallup and Sumner, and Sound Transit - the Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority. Similar events are currently being planned for four other communities to be served by Sounder commuter rail: Tacoma, Auburn, Kent and Tukwila. They are an opportunity to meet and discuss design concepts with staff members from the cities and Sound Transit, design professionals and local businesspeople and residents.

Sounder commuter rail will begin rush-hour service between Tacoma and Seattle in late 1999, and extend service north to Everett and south to Lakewood in early 2001. It is part of Sound Move, the regional transit plan approved by voters in 1996 which also includes the development of Link light rail between SeaTac and Northgate, a 1.6-mile downtown Tacoma

Link line, and the Regional Express program which includes 20 new limited-stop regional bus routes and numerous improvements to transit centers, park-and-ride lots and HOV lanes throughout the region.
