Public invited to learn more about efforts to evaluate corridor alternatives for extending high capacity transit further south

Sound Transit is hosting a series of neighborhood events tonight through Mar. 27 to provide opportunities for the public to learn about the process to evaluate alternatives for future transit service between SeaTac and Federal Way.

The agency is evaluating corridor alternatives to extend high capacity transit from the future light rail Angle Lake Station on S. 200th Street in SeaTac to the Federal Way Transit Center, a distance of about 7.6 miles. Design for the Angle Lake Station is underway, with construction to begin later this spring. The extension further south is currently in the alternatives analysis phase, with funding projected to be available for constructing an extension to Kent/Des Moines. The alternatives analysis will help develop a shovel-ready plan for extending high capacity transit to the Federal Way Transit Center when additional funding is secured.

Citizens are encouraged to stop by the following scheduled events, where Sound Transit staff will be available at information tables to talk about the agency's plans for extending high capacity transit further south.

These events are part of the Alternatives Analysis process currently underway to identify corridor and mode alternatives for the Federal Way Transit Extension. Following completion of the Alternatives Analysis this summer, the project will advance to a draft environmental review later this year, and final environmental review in 2015. The agency expects to obtain a Record of Decision from the Federal Transit Administration in 2016, with construction to Kent/Des Moines planned to begin in 2019. There will be additional opportunities for public involvement during the environmental and design process.

Link light rail service to Angle Lake is scheduled to begin in 2016, at the same time Sound Transit extends light rail from downtown Seattle to the University of Washington. Service to Kent/Des Moines is planned to begin in 2023.
