 Federal Way Link will add three new stations, one near Kent / Des Moines Rd S, one near S 272nd St, and one near the current Federal Way Transit Center
Federal Way Link Extension will open three new stations serving Kent, Des Moines, and Federal Way in 2024 and Sound Transit’s Board of Directors will soon select the names of the new stations.
How Did We Get Here?
The station naming process began in 2019, with engagement with key stakeholders, the Cities and the public.
Here is the progress we’ve made so far:
- Create a comprehensive list of station name options
- Vet the options for adherence with Sound Transit’s station naming policy
- Coordinate with cities and stakeholders to further narrow the shortlist of potential names
- Complete the first rounds of public engagement through open houses, surveys, and briefings
And here are the remaining steps needed to complete the process:
- Receive final comments from the key stakeholders and the Cities
- Complete a final round of public input
- Sound Transit Board selects final station names as early as May of 2022
Additionally, Sound Transit’s Station Naming Policy was updated in 2021 to ensure stations and facility names ensure continued relevancy, allow for future system expansion, and most importantly help reduce rider confusion and help them find their way within the system. The policy calls for:
- An emphasis on geography – city, neighborhood, landmark, or a combination of those
- Reducing the length and character counts of station names
- Avoiding redundancy or confusion with existing facilities
What Happens Next?
One of the crucial final steps in the process is to complete the public engagement by vetting the shortlist of names with you and asking for your comments on the potential names. The station names that were determined using the process outlined above – and that will be presented to ST’s Board are:
