Final EIS update

We expected to publish the Final Environmental Impact Statement under the State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) for the Operations and Maintenance Facility (OMF) South by the end of this year. However, we now anticipate the Final EIS will be published, along with the Board’s Project to Be Built action, no earlier than the second quarter of 2023. Ongoing design efforts have taken longer than originally projected. The Final EIS will include responses to substantive comments from Tribes, the public, agencies and cities received during the Draft EIS comment period in spring 2021. It will study the Preferred Alternative, along with the other two alternatives studied in the Draft EIS.

In December 2021, the Sound Transit Board identified the S. 336th Street Alternative in Federal Way as the Preferred Alternative for OMF South. The Board’s identification of a Preferred Alternative is not a final decision. This action shows where the Board is leaning in their decision-making, based on the findings in the Draft EIS and comments submitted by Tribes, agencies and the public during the Draft EIS public comment period.

Since that time, we have been advancing the project design and preparing the Final EIS. After we issue the Final EIS, the Board will select the OMF South project to build. We will keep you updated along the way.

Federal Way students learn “boring” work is anything but

In March 2022, Sound Transit invited four science classes at Pacific Christian Academy to see how fieldwork and geotechnical borings shape the design of projects like the future Operations and Maintenance Facility (OMF) South. Sound Transit experts explained the behind the scenes work that goes into large infrastructure projects and highlighted the variety of expertise and career paths at the agency. Whether you’re interested in being a scientist, engineer or community engagement specialist, there are exciting internships and job opportunities at Sound Transit.
