Sound Transit assesses system operations on East Link Extension

After four years of construction, there will be trains on the light rail tracks starting in November 2021. In this new phase, crews are starting to evaluate controls, safety and signal systems, and communications.

Nearby neighbors may notice occasional hi-rail vehicles and hi-rail vehicles pulling a single-car train (see photo) at walking speeds to evaluate clearance on the rail. Crews will be conducting this work during the night hours, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Uniform Police officers will be available to guide motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists during work hours.

These operations are an exciting milestone toward the opening of East Link, but they also create new safety challenges. Sound Transit reminds motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists to be alert for moving vehicles on the tracks.

Safety Reminder

  • Only cross at designated crosswalks and signalized intersections. Obey all traffic signs and signals. Link trains are electric and very quiet. Whenever you are around trains or tracks, remember to watch for trains.
  • Always look both ways before crossing the tracks. Trains can travel in any direction, on any track, at any time. After a train passes, another train may be coming from the opposite direction.
  • Do not walk, stand, or park a vehicle on the tracks. Trains can arrive at any time.
  • Stay away from the track switches that are used to change train directions. These switches are very powerful and can move at any time without warning.
  • When crossing the tracks on a bicycle, always cross the tracks at a 90-degree angle to prevent your bicycle tires from getting stuck in the tracks.
