Sound Transit Board realignment action

As a project stakeholder, you’ve heard a lot about the Sound Transit Board’s ongoing work to advance our voter-approved projects in a challenging fiscal environment.

In early 2020, the Board launched a process called realignment to review options for addressing the significant affordability gap affecting our future transit expansion projects not yet under construction. Most recently forecasted at $6.5 billion, this gap meant that completing many of these projects on their original schedules wouldn’t be affordable.

On Thursday, Aug. 5, the Board adopted a new flexible framework to support moving forward with projects as rapidly as possible. Learn more about the Board’s action in our Platform blog post.

Updated NE 130th Street Infill Station project timeline

The Board’s adopted plan identifies 2025 as the timeframe we can afford to complete construction and open the NE 130th Street Infill Station based on current revenue projections and cost estimates.

The NE 130th Street station had previously been scheduled to open in 2031, but the Board voted last year to advance the timeline for constructing the station’s foundations. They did not make a final decision about constructing and opening the station itself at that time, however.

By accelerating the full project to 2025, we can now minimize future disruption for Lynnwood Link passengers when the extension opens for service in mid-2024.

We’ll track fiscal challenges very closely as we work with partner jurisdictions and stakeholders to advance the NE 130th Street Infill Station project. Our ultimate timeline will come into greater focus as we advance the environmental review process and project design, including work to reduce or curtail costs to the greatest extent possible.

Our path forward will be shaped by determined efforts to secure expanded funding. Close collaboration with partners will be required to deliver projects as rapidly as possible.

Next steps

Upcoming work to advance the NE 130th Street Infill Station project will include:

  • Finalizing Issued for Construction design documents.
  • Negotiating construction costs and schedule with the construction contractor(s).
  • Finalizing permits needed for construction.
  • Board authorization to proceed with progressive construction efforts in phases starting as early as October 2021.

We hope you’ll continue to participate in our work to move this important project forward. Questions? Please feel free to reach out to My Nguyen at my.nguyen@soundtransit.org.
