Project update

Summer construction at Highline College wraps up ahead of Fall Quarter classes

This month Sound Transit’s contractors completed Phase 1 of the $1.4M College Way Connection Project (CWCP) on the Highline College campus in Des Moines. Over the course of four months, between the Spring and Fall quarters, crews rebuilt a new, larger parking lot on the south side of Highline College, conducted a series of utility improvements and created new connections between the campus and South 240th Street. The new parking lot and access points opened this month ahead of the start of fall quarter classes on September 26.

The CWCP represents an exciting level of intergovernmental collaboration. As a part of the Federal Way Link Extension (FWLE), Sound Transit, the City of Des Moines and Highline College collaborated to fund and deliver a series of improvements to the Highline College campus. When Kent Des Moines Station opens to the traveling public, Highline College community members from all over the Puget Sound area will have a convenient way to access the campus via public transportation.

The highlight of the CWCP will be the new College Way and the grand connection to campus. Sound Transit contractors will transform South 236th Place, a one-way alley, into a new four-lane boulevard that directly connects the campus to SR 99 and the new Link station. College Way, when complete, will give students and staff a direct connection to Kent Des Moines Station and help reorient the entire campus towards Pacific Highway South.

Construction on Phase 2 of CWCP will begin June 1, 2023. This phase consists of the development of College Way and improvements to the adjacent east and north parking lots.

Sound Transit joins Highline College and the City of Des Moines in welcoming students and staff back to campus and looks forward to an exciting year to come!
