Bus Rapid Transit I-405 project phases

  • The goal of this phase was to answer two basic questions:
    • What areas will it serve?
    • What type of transportation technology best suits the need?
  • During this phase commuters, community members and organizations and other stakeholders helped shape the project. Public meetings provided updates and gathered feedback. Outreach to local jurisdictions such as cities and counties provided critical input.
  • Representative projects were developed indicating transit mode, corridor, number of stations and general station locations. Representative projects and funding were included in ST3 for public vote.
  • On Nov. 8, 2016, voters approved Sound Transit 3 (ST3). Read the press release.

  • Sound Transit will evaluate and refine the voter-approved ST3 representative project for the I-405 and SR 522 BRT project corridors.
  • Sound Transit will host public involvement opportunities in 2018 to discuss BRT stations, parking facilities, transit centers, roadway improvements and BRT branding.
  • After reviewing the BRT technical analysis and public input, the Sound Transit Board of Directors is expected to take action by advancing a proposed project into conceptual engineering and environmental review on the I-405 and SR 522 corridors.

  • Sound Transit will begin developing conceptual engineering level designs for BRT elements including stations, transit centers, parking facilities and roadway improvements.
  • Sound Transit will conduct environmental review for the proposed project.
  • Sound Transit will hold public involvement opportunities to obtain input on design concepts and environmental studies.
  • After reviewing the BRT design concepts, environmental studies and public input, the Sound Transit Board of Directors will select the projects to be built to carry into design.

Design: 2020 – 2023

Construction: 2023 – 2025

  • Construction for most of the I-405 and SR 522 projects is expected to begin by 2023 and be completed by 2024. Construction of some elements may begin before 2023 and others may occur after service starts in 2024.
