Artist for garage chosen

We’re pleased to announce that artist Paz de la Calzada will be creating an integrated artwork for the new garage at Sumner Station.

Paz works in site-specific murals, installations and public art. Originally from Spain, her work is focused on nature and healing. Says Paz of her approach to art “I have a special interest in spaces in transit, where there is a flow of people. My work is often site-specific, temporary projects in dialogue with the urban landscape, having a real and direct interaction with the public. The organic lines and repetitive patterns of my mural drawings play with existing architecture, creating swooping pathways from the public sphere into contemplative realms.”

Paz is developing a design that will be integrated into the surfaces of the garage. In 2020, she was able to spend time in Sumner, meet with community members and research the botanical history of the area. Her design will be inspired by local native flora.

Procurement for garage contractor moving forward

As described in earlier newsletters, work on the Sumner garage was paused in 2020 due to uncertainties caused by the covid-19 pandemic. In August 2021, the Sound Transit Board supported moving the project forward, identifying 2025 as the timeframe for opening - this is the earliest possible completion date because of earlier delays. To address cost pressures on the project, we are evaluating options to balance costs with scope.

We are currently preparing the procurement for a contractor to complete designs and construct the garage. We expect to issue a Request for Proposals in early 2022, have the contractor on board by early 2023, and begin construction later that year.

Tips for traveling from Sumner to SeaTac

Traveling out of town this holiday season? Consider taking the train or bus to or from SeaTac airport. It may be faster than you think. Here are some tips:
