Sound Transit selects Absher Construction to build Auburn garage

On June 22, The Sound Transit Board has authorized the award of a design-build contract for a new Auburn parking garage and other access improvements to Absher Construction of Puyallup. The garage, located at 1st Street NW and A Street NW, is expected to open in early 2027.

The project will include improvements for walking, bicycling, or taking the bus to the station. This could include curb extensions, enhanced crosswalks, accessible curb ramps, and new bus shelters.

We will hold a public open house as we get closer to construction to share final design updates with the community and preview construction activities, which will begin next year.

A new future for Sounder South?

With changes in travel patterns, we have the opportunity to reimagine Sounder South – should we pivot from a service that primarily serves peak commuter travel (north to Seattle weekday mornings and south weekday afternoons) to one that serves more travel needs and types of trips?

Sound Transit will update the Sounder South Strategic Plan this year to consider whether potential additional trips should be prioritized over longer trains. Longer trains would help us carry more people during the busiest times, whereas more trips could help us provide service during different times of day or week.

Any new trips require approval and negotiation with BNSF Railway, which owns most of the tracks Sounder operates on.
