Upcoming temporary traffic changes on
I-405/NE 132nd Street Interchange
with WSDOT

The Washington State Department of Transportation will be delivering much of the Stride program work along the I-405 corridor. Below, you will find some information about upcoming construction work along I-405/NE 132nd Street Interchange in Kirkland, Washington. Sound Transit will be sending periodic updates from WSDOT as construction begins.

This summer, crews will continue installing sanitary sewer line and fish culverts within the I-405/NE 132nd Street Interchange project area. This work will require some temporary lane and road closures throughout the summer as well as a shift of traffic lanes along Northeast 132nd Street to the south. Details for each of the temporary traffic changes can be found below:

Traffic lane reduction on Totem Lake Boulevard Northeast in early July

For approximately one week in early July, Totem Lake Boulevard Northeast will be reduced to one travel lane during the daytime for sanitary sewer installation work. We will share specific dates and times once plans have been finalized.

  • Northbound and southbound traffic will alternate.
  • Access to properties on the east side of Totem Lake Boulevard Northeast will be maintained.
  • Flaggers will be posted at both ends of the lane reduction area to facilitate traffic flow.
  • A uniformed traffic control officer will be present to facilitate traffic flow.

Traffic and pedestrian route shifts for a new construction phase starting in late July

As part of ongoing construction activities, crews will put a new roadway alignment in place along Northeast 132nd Street, 116th Avenue Northeast and Totem Lake Boulevard Northeast. This shift will take place in late July and will allow crews to safely establish new work zones and move into the next phase of construction.

Traffic lanes along Northeast 132nd Street will shift north within the project area, and the left turn restrictions from westbound Northeast 132nd Street onto southbound 116th Way Northeast will remain in place. Similarly, pedestrian routes will shift to the north side of Northeast 132nd Street.

What’s next for Stride?

We are now working towards 90% design, which we anticipate will be completed in Summer 2023. During this phase, the project team will:

  • Finalize the design of roadways and sidewalks.
  • Finalize station design and integration of public art.
  • Prepare for construction.
  • Obtain land use, environmental and construction permits.
  • Continue the property acquisition process.
  • Continue engaging with the public, community groups, businesses and elected officials to inform about design and construction plans.

Once we complete the 90% design, we will host another open house as well as other engagement opportunities. From there, construction will begin in late 2023/early 2024, and service is expected to start 2026/2027.
