Hiring of team to build garage under way

In March, Sound Transit released a Request for Qualifications to procure a design-build contractor to design and construct the Sumner Station garage. After evaluating the proposers, Sound Transit has selected several firms to advance to the next stage of the procurement process. A winning bid will be selected later this year.

We expect to hold a public open house in early 2023 to share final designs with the community and preview construction activities, which will begin later that year. The garage is expected to open in late 2025.

Reminder: how to take transit from Sumner to SeaTac

Traveling out of town this summer? Consider taking the train or bus to or from SeaTac airport. It may be faster than you think. Here are some tips:

  • Use Sound Transit’s Trip Planner or Google Maps (transit directions) to find details for your trip time. For personal assistance, passengers can also contact our Passenger Care team at 1-888-889-6368/TTY 711 (Monday-Friday 7 a.m.-7 p.m.) main@soundtransit.org. Translated assistance is also available.
  • Check the Sound Transit Ride With Us webpage for information on fares and how to pay. Reduced fares are available - see if you qualify.
  • Traveling to SeaTac Airport from Sumner: Start your trip either with Sounder (when it’s running) or ST Express route 578, both at Sumner station.
    • If you start on Sounder, you can transfer at Kent Station to Metro Route 161, which takes you to SeaTac or Ride to King Street Station and transfer to Link, riding southbound to SeaTac.
    • If you start on the 578, transfer at Federal Way Transit Center to either ST Express Route 574 or Metro RapidRide A Line, both of which take you directly to SeaTac.
  • Traveling to Sumner from SeaTac: See Sound Transit’s SeaTac transit map for where to catch your bus.
    • If Sounder is running, catch the Metro 161 to Kent Station, transfer to Sounder and ride to Sumner.
    • If Sounder is not running, catch the 574 or A Line to Federal Way Transit Center. Transfer to ST Express 578 and ride to Sumner.
