Public hearing and open house on Lynnwood transit projects

Body

An expanded transit center in Lynnwood with direct access to I-5 high-occupancy vehicle lanes (HOV) will be the topic of an open house and public hearing on Tuesday, June 27, 5 - 7 p.m. at the Lynnwood Public Library, 19200 44th Ave. W., Lynnwood.

The five-acre addition to the existing Lynnwood Park-and-Ride lot and Transit Center will open in 2003. The new project will offer commuters more parking, larger passenger waiting areas and public art, plus swifter and more dependable transit service thanks to direct access ramps for buses, vanpool and carpools to I-5 HOV lanes, thus bypassing congestion on regular surface streets. The proposed site for these new facilities was chosen after a lengthy process that considered six different sites in Lynnwood.

Hosted by Sound Transit and the Washington state Department of Transportation in partnership with Community Transit and the City of Lynnwood, the informal open house and public hearing will give people an opportunity to learn about the project and review the environmental assessment report. Comments for the record may be given to a court reporter in attendance at the event or in writing. Written comments should be submitted to Sound Transit, Project Manager Linda J. Sullivan, 401 S. Jackson St., Seattle, WA 98104-2826.

The Lynnwood project is one of 35 new capital projects being built by Regional Express, including other transit centers, park-and-ride lots and HOV access projects. A division of Sound Transit, Regional Express is also introducing a system of 18 new limited-stop ST Express bus routes.

Voter-approved in 1996, Sound Transit is on track to implement a three-county regional transit system plan known as Sound Move. Along with Regional Express, Sound Move includes Sounder commuter rail, an 82-mile system using existing rail lines serving Everett, Edmonds, Mukilteo, Seattle, Tukwila, Kent, Auburn, Sumner, Puyallup, Tacoma and Lakewood; and Link light rail, a 21-mile system connecting the cities of Seattle, Tukwila and SeaTac and a 1.6-mile system in Tacoma.
