At its July 8 meeting the Sound Transit Board finalized the northern portion of the Tacoma Link light rail route and station locations, affirming the route preferred by the Tacoma City Council. The board had identified the route for the southern portion of the 1.6-mile "L" shaped route in February. The route begins at the Tacoma Dome transit station on 25th Street, going west to Pacific Avenue where it turns north on a single set of tracks along Pacific to just south of the University/Museum light rail station. The board's recent action approved continuing from that point with two sets of tracks on Pacific Avenue to 17th Street, turning up Commerce Street to the last station on the line to be located on the north side of S. 9th Street. Construction is scheduled to begin by fall of 2000, with the line opening for operation in 2002.
