Sound Transit celebrates the grand opening of Mercy Housing NW’s Connection Angle Lake

Transit-oriented development project delivers 130 units of affordable housing to the Angle Lake Station Area

Publish Date

Sound Transit joined Mercy Housing Northwest and partners yesterday to celebrate the grand opening of their Connection Angle Lake affordable housing project. Mercy Housing’s transit-oriented development project includes 130 units that bring 211 bedrooms across studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom homes directly adjacent to the Angle Lake Station.

Connection Angle Lake’s homes serve households earning under 50% and 60% area median income. The project includes 26 units for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and 8 units for recipients of King County Housing Authority vouchers. The Arc of King County will operate out of the ground floor commercial space to provide critical services to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.

The Connection Angle Lake site was acquired by Sound Transit in 2013 and used for staging during the construction of the Angle Lake Station and parking garage. The land was transferred to Mercy Housing at a discount in 2022 to support the project’s affordable housing outcomes.

"Sound Transit is proud to have been able to contribute to this transit-oriented development by offering the site at a discount to support and bolster the supply of affordable housing,” said Sound Transit CEO Dow Constantine. “As people move into their new homes at Connection Angle Lake, they can enjoy connections along the 1 Line — from Angle Lake to Lynnwood — and look forward to more connections as we prepare to open Link light rail to Federal Way in December and to the Eastside with the Crosslake Connection in 2026."

“Mercy Housing Northwest prides itself on building strong partnerships with each new affordable housing community we develop,” said Mercy Housing Northwest President Joe Thompson. “As Connection Angle Lake begins to welcome families and residents home, we are honored to work alongside partners such as Sound Transit, Amazon Housing Fund and The Arc of King County. We are also humbled by the wonderful and countless neighbors, community members, organizations, and representatives from all levels of government who rallied around this transit-oriented community. Building affordable housing takes a community, and Connection Angle Lake has been greeted with the absolute best our community has to offer.”

This project received funding from various public and private partners, including the Washington State Housing Finance Commission, King County, and the Amazon Housing Fund. Amazon contributed a $17 million low-interest rate loan and a $2 million grant. These funds are part of the Amazon Housing Fund, a $2 billion commitment to preserve or create more than 20,000 affordable homes across the company’s hometown communities.

Sound Transit's combined approach of discounting property for affordable housing and aligning funding and resources to support successful projects has fostered more than 20 projects that deliver 3,481 new housing units. These homes provide the community with affordable places to live located in opportunity-rich areas connected to regional transit.
