Sound Transit has scheduled meetings next week in Tacoma, Seattle and Everett to provide information about upcoming contracting opportunities for the University Link light rail project. The meetings are scheduled:

Tues., Oct. 7, 6-8 p.m.
William M. Factory Small Business Incubator, 1423 E. 29th, Tacoma

Wed., Oct. 8, 6-8 p.m.
Associated General Contractors, 1200 Westlake Ave., Seattle

Thurs., Oct. 9, 6-8 p.m.
Workforce Development Council of Snohomish County, 728 134th St. S.W., Ste. 217, Everett

The meetings will address an overview of the light rail project and contracting processes, the types of work needed, a project construction schedule, and information that subcontractors need to compete for work with prime and general contractors. This is an excellent opportunity for small businesses and prime contractors to learn about each other’s business needs and capabilities.

Ten contracts will be advertised for bid between 2008 and 2013. Construction begins in December on a 3.15-mile extension of light rail from downtown Seattle to the University of Washington. The project is scheduled for completion in 2016. For more information about the contracting meetings or to RSVP, visit diversity.

The initial Link light rail line from downtown Seattle to Sea-Tac Airport opens for service next year. Construction is nearly complete and vehicles are currently testing in the Rainier Valley and Tukwila.

Further extensions of the light rail system north to Lynnwood, east to Overlake and south to the Federal Way area are included in the mass transit expansion issue on the Nov. 4 ballot. Expanded regional express bus and commuter rail service also are included, as is more parking and improved transit access.
